Zigbee in 2026: Zigbee 4.0, Suzi and which coordinator to buy for Home Assistant

Matter gets the headlines, but Zigbee still runs millions of sensors, bulbs and switches, and it has just gained a long-range sub-GHz sibling. Here is where it fits in 2026, and which USB or PoE coordinator to buy.

Every smart-home conversation in 2026 seems to start with Matter. Yet if you open a typical Home Assistant install, a large share of the sensors, bulbs and plugs are still talking Zigbee, and for good reason: it is cheap, low-power, local, and the devices are everywhere. The good news is that Zigbee is not standing still. This guide explains what has changed, how Zigbee relates to Thread and Matter, and which coordinator to buy.

What is new: Zigbee 4.0 and Suzi

In November 2025 the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) announced Zigbee 4.0 and a new brand, Suzi, for Zigbee's sub-GHz long-range mode. In the CSA's announcement, Zigbee 4.0 is a backwards-compatible release (with Zigbee 3.0 and Smart Energy) that adds optional features manufacturers can pick from:

  • Stronger security: cryptographic agility, dynamic link keys, a device interview step, restricted mode, secured channels and better protection against replay attacks.
  • Better reliability: standardised network-level retries, improved polling for battery-powered devices and expanded acknowledgements.
  • Easier set-up: Zigbee Direct (onboarding and control over Bluetooth Low Energy, with no hub) and batch commissioning of many devices at once.

Suzi carries Zigbee onto the 800 MHz band in Europe and 900 MHz in North America. The CSA promises longer range, better wall penetration and fewer repeaters. On 2 September 2026 the Alliance opened the Suzi product certification programme. Suzi complements rather than replaces 2.4 GHz Zigbee, with dual-band bridge devices linking the two.

What does that mean for you today? Mostly: nothing to buy yet. Certification has only just opened, so certified Suzi devices will take time to reach shops, and Home Assistant and Zigbee2MQTT support for Zigbee 4.0 features will follow the hardware. Nabu Casa says Zigbee 4.0 support on its ZBT-2 adapter is under review, and that it would need both a firmware update and Home Assistant support.

Zigbee, Thread and Matter: how they fit together

These three are often presented as rivals, but they sit at different layers. Zigbee and Thread are radio and mesh networks. Matter is an application layer that runs over Thread, Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Zigbee devices do not speak Matter natively; they join the Matter world through a bridge, which a hub or Home Assistant can provide.

  • Zigbee: the largest catalogue of cheap, battery-friendly devices. Needs a coordinator.
  • Thread: an IP-based mesh for Matter devices. Needs a Thread border router, which many speakers and hubs already include.
  • Matter: the common language so that devices from different brands can work together. See our recent coverage of Matter 1.6.

The practical advice: do not rip out a working Zigbee network to “go Matter”. Keep it, and add Thread and Matter devices alongside it as you buy new kit.

ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT?

There are two main ways to run Zigbee with Home Assistant.

  • ZHA (Zigbee Home Automation) is built into Home Assistant. It is the simplest route: plug in a coordinator, add the integration and start pairing.
  • Zigbee2MQTT is an open-source bridge that publishes devices over MQTT. It is independent of Home Assistant, has its own web interface and a very large supported-devices list, and suits people who want to keep Zigbee running even when they rebuild Home Assistant.

Both work with the coordinators below. If you are new to Zigbee, start with ZHA; you can migrate later.

Which coordinator should you buy?

The old standard was the Texas Instruments CC2652 chip, but Silicon Labs EFR32 chips (the MG21 and MG24) now dominate. The table summarises the main options as reviewed by SmartHomeScene and the manufacturers' own pages. Prices vary by retailer, so check before buying.

Our advice

  • Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi or mini PC: the ZBT-2 is the easy, supported default. Use a short USB extension lead to keep it away from USB 3 interference.
  • Server in a cupboard, devices across the house: a PoE coordinator such as the SLZB-06MG24 lets you put the radio in the middle of the house, away from the server.
  • Want Zigbee and Thread at once: use two radios rather than relying on multiprotocol firmware.

Tips for a healthy Zigbee network

  • Mains-powered devices (bulbs, plugs) act as routers and strengthen the mesh; battery sensors do not.
  • Choose a Zigbee channel (15, 20 or 25) that avoids your busiest Wi-Fi channels.
  • Back up your coordinator before changing or migrating it.
  • Pair devices where they will live, close to a router device.

Is Zigbee still worth it in 2026?

Yes. The ecosystem is mature, devices are inexpensive, everything stays local, and the new 4.0 and Suzi work should keep it relevant for security and long-range uses such as gardens and outbuildings. We will update this guide as Suzi products and Home Assistant support arrive.
