The ESPHome desktop app: flash your first smart-home device without touching a terminal

ESPHome now has a desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that sets itself up and opens the Device Builder for you. No Python, no command line, no Home Assistant add-on required.

ESPHome lets you turn cheap ESP32 and ESP8266 boards into local, cloud-free sensors and switches. The hard part for beginners has always been the setup. On 4 August 2026, ESPHome developer Jesse Hills announced a desktop app that aims to remove it.

What it is

The app is a desktop version of the ESPHome Device Builder, the visual tool introduced the month before, which lets you configure devices without writing code (you can still edit the configuration if you want). It runs on macOS, Windows and Linux, and works entirely on your own computer, so there is no account or password to set up.

How to get started

  1. Download the installer for your system from the ESPHome install page.
  2. Run it and launch the app. It prepares everything in the background on first start.
  3. The Device Builder then opens automatically in your browser.
  4. Start a project, for example by browsing the Component Catalog.

Handy features

  • System tray icon. Reopen the Device Builder, check for updates or quit from the tray.
  • Remote compilation. If your ESPHome runs on a low-powered machine such as a Raspberry Pi, the app can compile firmware for you and send the result back. Flashing still happens where it normally would.
  • Update checks from the tray, so you do not need to watch the changelog.

What does not change

This is an extra option, not a replacement. If you already use pip, Docker or the Home Assistant add-on, your setup is untouched. The post lists no system requirements and gives few details on setting up remote compilation, so treat those as things to test.

Where it fits

It pairs well with the ESPHome Starter Kit described in our Community Day article, which is aimed at the same beginners, and the latest release is covered in ESPHome 2026.10. If your devices connect to Home Assistant, our Home Assistant 2026.10 guide explains the current state of play.
